Match: Mississippi Tag Title (1/3/80)

January 3, 1980
National Guard Armory
Tupelo, MS

Mississippi State Tag Team Title
Ghetto Gang (champions) vs Sensational Excellence

Littleton climbs into the ring. A.J. Adams walks down the aisle in his referee shirt. Littleton begins the announcement. “Ladies and gentlemen, we’ve reached the main event of the evening!!” The crowd cheers. “The following contest is set for one fall with a one-hour time limit. The referee for this match is A.J. Adams. It is for the Mississippi State Tag Team Title.”

“Walk This Way” by Aerosmith begins to play. Seth, Xavier and Amy walk to the ring to a big pop from the crowd.

Littleton continues, “Introducing first, the challengers! Accompanied to the ring by Amy Andrews, at a total combined weight of 493 pounds, here are ‘Sensational’ Seth Greeley and ‘Excellent’ Xavier Cross … Sensational Excellence!!!”

The crowd continues to cheer as Sensational Excellence climbs the turnbuckles and play to the crowd. The music changes to “Simple Man” by Lynyrd Skynyrd. The crowd begins to boo. Boss Crump and his Ghetto Gang emerge from the entrance. The crowd boos harder.

Littleton continues, “Their opponents, accompanied to the ring by Boss Crump, from Memphis, weighing in at a total combined weight of 530 pounds, are the Mississippi State Tag Team champions … Chad ‘Flame’ Young and Joe Blow … the Ghetto Gang!!!”

Ghetto Gang climbs into the ring with the Mississippi State Tag Team title belts slung over their shoulders. They hand the belts over to A.J. A.J. holds the belts high to show the crowd. The crowd boos terribly as Ghetto Gang takes off their ring jackets to reveal anti-Mississippi t-shirts.

Littleton leaves the ring. A.J. hands the belts to him as he gets to the floor. He turns around to the teams and tells both to have only one member per team in the match. Chad and Xavier step out of the ring. A.J. calls for the bell as Joe and Seth circle each other. They lock up. Joe gains the advantage with a side headlock. Seth backs him against the ropes. Seth shoots him off across the ring. Joe comes off the opposite ropes with a running clothesline, but Seth ducks it. Seth runs into the side ropes. For thirty seconds, the two men crisscross the ring. Joe stops in the middle of the ring and hip tosses Seth. Seth lands in Ghetto Gang’s corner. Chad takes a swing at him, but Seth ducks out of the way quickly. A.J. warns Chad about interfering.

Joe picks Seth up in a fireman’s carry. Seth slides down his back with a sunset flip. Joe drives his fist into the mat as Seth rolls out of the way. Seth gets back up to his feet. A commotion throughout the crowd gets all four wrestlers’ attention. From opposite sides of the ring, Jason James and the Argonauts climb through the crowd and over the guardrail. The Argonauts climb onto the ring apron.

Seth and Joe look at each other. They question each other if this were their idea. Jason slides into the ring as the Argonauts step over the top rope. Jason has Littleton’s microphone in his hand.

“This has gone on long enough,” Jason says. “We have been overlooked for title shots for far too long!” The crowd begins to boo. Jason continues, “We want our tag team title belts back! Belts that were stolen from us almost two years ago! We demand to face the winner of this match for the tag team titles next week!”

At that, Xavier and Chad climb into the ring. Ghetto Gang and Sensational Excellence stare down Jason and the Argonauts. The three men don’t back down. All seven men turn to the entrance when “Cold As Ice” by Foreigner begins to play. Arnold walks down the aisle and makes his way to the ring. He climbs into the ring and snatches the microphone out of Jason’s hand.

“No one,” Arnold says, “no one, and I mean no one comes into MY RING and demands matches!! You haven’t been given a title shot because you can’t keep your men from getting themselves disqualified. You don’t win matches so you don’t move up the rankings ladder. There’s no way you’re going to get a title match next week! Just no way!”

Boss Crump climbs into the ring while Arnold’s talking. He taps Arnold on the shoulder and whispers into his ear. Arnold starts to smile.

“It seems that Boss Crump has a business opportunity for you after all,” Arnold says as he hands the microphone to Crump.

Crump says, “I believe that this match is a complete wash, which makes my Ghetto Gang still the champions, am I correct?” A.J. nods his head. “With that in mind, I have a proposition for you. We will defend our titles against you next week in this very ring, but there will be certain stipulations.”

Jason says, “Anything!”

Crump continues, “First, My boys will put the Mississippi State Tag Team Titles on the line against your masks. You win, you get the belts. We win, we get your masks.” Jason looks a bit befuddled, but quickly agrees.

“Second,” Crump says, “If you lose, we also get to shave your head Jason James.” Jason flatly refuses this stipulation. Crump continues, “Wait a second before answering. I’m not done. If we lose, we’ll also relinquish the automatic rematch clause. You beat us, you won’t have to face us again until we’ve EARNED the title shot you so badly want to demand.”

Jason smiles. “You’ve got yourself a deal, Crump!”

Crump turns to Chad and Joe. “Shake on it, boys!” Ghetto Gang jumps on #1. Jason goes after Crump. Sensational Excellence double shoulder tackles #2 back into the corner. Arnold and A.J. motion for help to come from the back. Jason tosses Crump out of the ring. Arnold tries to restrain Jason. #1 slams Ghetto Gang’s heads together. Xavier nails #2 with a forearm smash. The rest of the referee corps and the security detail rush the ring. After a few minutes, they have the eight men separated. Jason and the Argonauts are taken out of the ring first. The crowd cheers wildly over the brawl.

Match: Mississippi Heavyweight Title (3/23/78)

March 23, 1978
National Guard Armory
Tupelo, MS

Mississippi State Heavyweight Title
‘Excellent’ Xavier Cross (champion) vs Grappler

Littleton climbs back into the ring. Andrew Adams walks down the aisle and slides into the ring. Littleton begins the announcement, “The following contest is the main event of the evening!!!” The crowd cheers excitedly. “It is set for one fall with a one-hour time limit. The man in charge of the action once the bell rings is Referee Andrew Adams.”

The masked Grappler makes his way to the ring. The fans give him a good reaction. A couple of fans ask for autographs along the way.

Littleton continues, “Introducing first, the challenger, from Starkville, weighing 233 pounds, here is the Grappler!!!” The crowd continues to cheer a bit.

The cheers increase as Xavier and a young brunette in an emerald green t-shirt and black jeans make their way to the ring.

Littleton continues, “His opponent, accompanied to the ring by Amy Andrews, from Oxford, weighing 257 pounds, is the Mississippi State Heavyweight champion. Here is ‘Excellent’ Xavier Cross!!!” The crowd cheers extremely well. There are also a few catcalls for Amy.

Xavier climbs into the ring. Amy goes to take a seat at ringside. Xavier climbs the turnbuckle to show the fans the title belt. The fans cheer greatly. The reaction changes slightly as ‘Sensational’ Seth and Jessica Greeley run down to the ring. Seth slides into the ring and takes the microphone away from Littleton.

Seth turns to Xavier, who has stepped off the turnbuckle, and says, “Cross, I need to speak with you!” Xavier looks at him and shrugs his shoulders.

Seth continues, “I deserve to be in this match. Everyone here knows that I nearly had you beat last week.” The crowd starts to get a bit restless. Seth turns to Grappler, “No offense, Grappler, you’re a good wrestler and undefeated if I remember right. But you’re not quite championship material. After all, you’re not ‘Sensational’ or even ‘Excellent’. But you do have skills. I’m a better match for the championship than you are.” The crowd continues to become restless. Some even tell Seth to stop his whining.

Seth is undeterred. “Grappler, I want you to step aside and allow me to have this match for you. I can beat him and my first title defense will be against you. Scout’s honor.”

Grappler steps closer to Seth. He grabs the microphone. “Let me get this straight. You want me to give you MY title match?” Seth nods and says, “Yes.” Grappler continues, “I am the Grappler. I am one of two UNDEFEATED singles wrestlers here in the MVW. You’ve NEVER won a match. I’m not quite sure MVW management placed you in the title matches these last two weeks, but you’ve screwed them up each time! To top that off, you’re not only NOT an undefeated wrestler, you’re a WINLESS wrestler!! You’ve never won a match in your career!” The crowd gives a big reaction to that.

Xavier steps up to the both of them and takes the microphone from Grappler. “Seth,” he says, “you’ve had your turn. You’ve had two turns. And you haven’t beaten me. You don’t deserve to be in this match. You’ve dropped from having great potential to being the bottom of the barrel. When you earn another title shot, it’s there for you. Tonight’s Grappler’s turn. Now, if you’ll kindly leave the ring. We may continue this match and not hold things up for the fans who came to see Grappler challenge me for this title.”

Arnold Adams makes his way down to the ring with A.J. Adams, Marty Gentz and Thomas Jackson. They climb into the ring and separate the three men. Arnold grabs the microphone. “Seth,” he says, “not everything is going to be handed to you in this life. I know you’ve had most everything handed to you throughout your life. Title shots aren’t going to be one of them. You’ll have to earn your next title shot. And this little stunt of yours tonight has earned you the indignity of facing Mr. Tennessee in the OPENING match of next week’s card. I’ve told you once already. You’re not getting a title shot any time soon. First, you’ll have to live up to your nickname. Be ‘Sensational’ and I’ll let you have another title shot. Right now, though, you’re simply mediocre at best.” He turns to the referee crew. “Take him out of here.”

The referee crew force Seth out of the ring and up the aisle. The fans start chanting “Crybaby” after him. Arnold steps back to take both Xavier and Grappler into his sights. “I am the one who determines who gets the title shots around here. Don’t forget that!”

His/Her Story:

Thomas was born on November 29, 1942 to Eric and Wanda Jackson in Corinth, MS. Thomas is their only child. The Jackson’s lost two other children—an older son and a younger daughter—to childhood illnesses. Jackson lived his entire life in Corinth, MS. He played point guard for Corinth High School (1957-59), Northeast Mississippi Community College (1959-1961) and University of Mississippi (1962-63).

Thomas graduated with a B.S. in Journalism in 1963. He began working for the Daily Corinthian shortly after graduation. He worked there for twenty-seven years. He retired on December 31, 2000 from his position as newspaper editor. His contact with the MVW began when he started covering Arnold’s attempts to begin the MVW in Tupelo, Corinth, Holly Springs and Oxford. During an interview for one of the newspaper articles, Thomas said that if the organization got off the ground he’d enjoy being a part of it.

Having let himself go from his once athletic form, Thomas said that he’d be a referee or ring announcer. Arnold had already promised the ring announcer position to Michael Littleton. He told Thomas that he could be a referee if he were still able to take a few bumps and bruises in the matches. Thomas agreed and he began to have a decent career as a wrestling referee. He retired from the ring on August 1, 1999 after Mr. Tennessee II successfully defended his Tennessee Heavyweight Title in a cage match against Phantom. During the match both heels brutalized each other and the referee with the steel cage.

Just over a year after leaving the MVW, Thomas was diagnosed with lung cancer. The diagnosis really wasn’t a surprise to anyone who had ever been around Thomas because he smoked two packs a day. Thomas died at home on September 3, 2001, surrounded by his wife and four kids.

His Story:

Travis and Troy Canby are the twin sons born to Terrance and Theresa (Piecuch) Canby on January 13, 1958 in Holly Springs, MS. Being the more athletically inclined of the twins, Troy gained the most success in the ring. While Travis was acceptably gifted with his high-flying maneuvers, Troy was the one who looked to be the most promising wrestler.

Troy's athletic ability was first noticed while playing Little League baseball. He was able to make many dramatic catches that were deemed as impossible by even Major League standards. Troy went on to play first base for Holly Springs High School and earned a baseball scholarship to the University of North Alabama in Florence. He played all four years of college baseball, working out his MVW schedule accordingly. He was signed by the Baltimore Orioles in 1979 as an undrafted free agent and assigned to the Charlotte Orioles. Having to decide between his career as a wrestler or a baseball player, Troy picked the MVW and never reported to camp in Charlotte.

After the tag team quit wrestling in 1997, Troy went back to school at Covenant Theological Seminary in St. Louis. He graduated in 2001 and was assigned as the Pastor at First Presbyterian Church in Clarendon, AR.

Troy was serving his vicarage at Trinity Presbyterian Church in Cleveland, TN, when he learned about Travis' suicide. Crushed by the suddenness, Troy contemplated quitting his theological studies to return to the family. Terrance insisted that Troy stay in Seminary and complete what God had called him to do.

After five years in the parish, Troy accepted a call to Redeemer Presbyterian Church in Florence, AL to work with Reformed University Fellowship (RUF) at the University of North Alabama. Today, he still calls Florence his home as he continues to guide the students at his alma mater along the biblical path God has determined for each of their lives.

His Story:

Travis and Troy Canby are the twin sons born to Terrance and Theresa (Piecuch) Canby on January 13, 1958 in Holly Springs, MS. As with most fraternal twins, Travis and Troy are polar opposites. Travis is the dramatically-talented one. Troy is the more athletically gifted. They used these differences to make a cohesive tag team.

Travis began his drama career as Santa Claus in the Holly Springs Elementary School’s Kindergarten Christmas program. He also used his dramatic talents in the annual Christmas Program at Christ Presbyterian Church in Oxford, MS, the Canbys’ home congregation. Throughout his childhood, Travis worked in many plays and musicals with the Pied Piper Playhouse in Tupelo during the summer. Travis considered himself an accomplished actor and singer. In 1975, he sent a demo to Sun Records in Memphis, but he was turned down for a recording contract.

Travis graduated 14th in his class from Holly Springs High School and went on to continue his drama career at the University of Mississippi. He received his Bachelor of Arts in Theater Arts in 1979. He completed his last year of college while wrestling. This proved to be quite the challenge for Travis because his grades began to slip as he got more involved in wrestling and vice versa.

Arnold thought the best use of Travis’ talents was backstage in the planning stages for upcoming feuds and storylines in the MVW. It was later credited with the surprise pairing of A.J. Adams and Mr. Hyde as a tag team. Travis helped many of the storylines develop around several key wrestlers, including Mr. Hyde, Helena Handbasket, Psycho Ward, Extreme Militia and the Friends in Low Places.

Unfortunately, Travis wanted more than just to write the storylines for the MVW. He wanted more credit and acclaim for himself. After the Canbys left the MVW in 1997, Travis tried to find a place for his dramatic skills to be used well. After a couple of dismal years with the Alabama Shakespeare Festival, Travis committed suicide on April 9, 2000.

Wrestler: Mr. Tennessee

Notable Feuds: Mr. Mississippi, ‘Double A’ Arnold Adams
Image: Billy Jack Haynes

His Story:

Edward was born on June 21, 1959 to Thomas and Marlene Willoughby in Little Rock, AR. Thomas was the Assistant District Manager of J.C. Penney in Little Rock. The family moved to Memphis in 1972 when Thomas was offered the District Manager position in Memphis.

Edward graduated from Raleigh-Egypt High School in 1977. He went to Memphis State University and studied History. He was paired up with A.J. Adams in Rawls Hall as roommates. Edward met and married his first wife, Allison Walker, on February 14, 1978. Allison died on April 23, 1978, when her car was crushed when a cable snapped on a crane at a construction site as she was heading to class. Edward was crushed. Barely able to even get himself to class, Arnold gave him a couple of weeks off from wrestling so that he could grieve.

Allison’s family was rather wealthy and Allison had a trust fund that she was able to access after she was married. Her family, however, disliked Edward from the very beginning. They fought with him over the rights to the trust fund. The Walker family would eventually win the lawsuit. Edward used the hatred for his in-laws to fuel the fire and make himself an even better Heel in the ring.

Edward never married again, but he was known throughout the locker room to know the best strip clubs near each of the wrestling sites. This would ultimately be his downfall. He was at Déjà Vu in New Orleans in December 1987. One of the drunken patrons was harassing one of the dancers. Edward came to her defense. A fight broke out and twelve men were ejected from the club. Two days later, the drunken patron was found shot to death in his New Orleans home. Edward’s shotgun was used and his fingerprints alone were found on the gun. Edward was arrested on February 24, 1988, as he was arriving to wrestle that night at Fogelman Arena. Arnold worked out a deal with the NOPD to allow Edward one more match that night before being officially booked. Edward and Arnold worked up a quick feud throughout the card which resulted in a Loser Leaves MVW match that Arnold won. Edward was taken away in police custody that night. He was convicted of first-degree murder in July 1988 and sentenced to fifteen years to life at Angola in August.

Upon his parole in March 2004, he contacted Arnold to have another contract with the MVW. Arnold refused, saying, “I don’t give local contracts anymore,” making reference to the fact that his parole documents denied him any reason for departure from the state of Louisiana. On March 31, 2004, when the MVW next wrestled at Fogelman Arena, Edward interfered in the first three matches before being ejected from the building by security. A restraining order was granted not long after barring Edward from any MVW event in New Orleans.

Edward held only one title in his MVW career. He became the first Tennessee State Heavyweight champion on July 5, 1980. After Allison’s death and the resulting legal battle, Edward’s life continued to spiral downward. This also affected his in-ring performance. After losing the title on September 6, 1980, Edward was never given another title shot. He dropped to the realm of the jobber and it seemed in many matches to even be above his ability.

Edward was found shot to death in his New Orleans apartment on April 23, 2005, twenty-seven years to the date that his beloved Allison died. There was an investigation into the shooting. It couldn’t be completely ruled as a homocide so the NOPD declared it a suicide. A tragic end for a wrestler who thought he had nothing to live for.

Wrestler: Grappler

Wrestler Name: Grappler
Real Name: Tanner Greeley
Birthday: January 30, 1956
Hometown: Starkville, MS
Marital Status: Married
Alignment: Heel
Height: 6'
Weight: 235
Theme Music: “La Grange” by ZZ Top
Debut: March 09, 1978
Debut Opp: Mr. Mississippi
Last Match: 12/31/98
Last Opp: Friends in Low Places
PriDistrict: MidAmerica
Style: Amateur
Finishing Move: Hangman
Weapon: anything
Notable Feuds: 'Sensational' Seth Greeley
Image: Masked Wrestler, Brian Christopher

His Story:

Tanner Greeley was born on January 30, 1956 to Alexander and Cleopatra (Mulcahy) Greeley in Starkville, MS. He is the couple’s only child. Cleopatra had three miscarriages and two stillbirths after Tanner. Alexander’s brother Bernard also lived in Starkville. His wife Cassandra died in 1958. Bernard and his three-year-old son Seth were brought into the family. Tanner and Seth grew up more as brothers than as cousins.

This led to a great competitive spirit between the two from an early age. Both wanted to be the star on the Little League team. Each outdid the other from time to time. When it came to their junior high years at Starkville Junior High, Tanner began to outshine cousin Seth on the baseball diamond. In eighth grade, Tanner was chosen as the starting second basemen over Seth. Seth settled for the starting shortstop position. In high school, the two parted ways as far as athletics were concerned. Tanner continued to play baseball, earning a baseball scholarship to Ole Miss.

Tanner and Seth continued their competitiveness once they entered MVW. They were grouped as a tag team, something of a knock-off of ‘Hollywood’ John Tatum and Len Denton. The storyline peaked after the tag team had lost their third Mississippi State Tag Team Title. In the tournament for the title, Tanner turned on Seth during the match and left the arena. This sparked a heated decade-long feud between the two cousins. On October 17, 1985, the two Greeleys met in the main event. It was a hair-vs-mask match that went the one-hour time limit. Arnold Adams declared that one of the wrestlers was going to lose their top. A coin toss fell in Tanner’s favor and Seth was shaved. Two years later, it was Delta Heavyweight champion Seth defending against Grappler in a title-vs-mask match. Once again, the match went the time limit. Special stipulations in the match declared that Grappler had to win the title in order to keep his mask. Tanner unmasked to Seth’s great shock and amazement. Seth knew that Tanner was one of the masked wrestlers, but he had always assumed that he was Mr. Mississippi.

While at Ole Miss, Tanner majored in Business Administration. Tanner invested his wrestling winnings carefully. After gaining a sizeable amount from the stock market, he began investing in restaurant franchises. By the mid-1990s, Tanner owned most of the Chili’s® franchises in Mississippi and northern Alabama. He also dabbled in fast food with several McDonald’s® and Krystal® franchises throughout the Mid-South.

Tanner left the ring at the end of 1998. He and his long-time tag team partner, Executioner, held the MVW Tag Team Titles that they had taken from long-time rivals Sensational Excellence earlier in the year. They lost the titles on December 31 to the Friends in Low Places tandem of Vicious Vlad and Tombstone. Both men went on to take head office positions in the MVW. As Seth had already been named Delta district commissioner, Tanner was appointed as the MidAmerican district commissioner.

After retiring from the ring, Tanner married long-time girlfriend Betty Elsner (‘Hot’ Heidi Harris) in November 2000. Betty had divorced Jason Allanson (Johnny Extreme) in February 1992. Tanner and Betty had dated since 1993.

Tanner ended his association with MVW after a nearly fatal train wreck in August 2004. Tanner was taking an Amtrak from Seattle to Chicago when it derailed in Montana. Tanner was crushed under a great deal of debris. His back and both legs were broken. Once he arrived at Deaconess Hospital in Bozeman, he went into surgery to see about saving his legs. Both legs were amputated below the knee, but he was able to get prosthetic limbs to replace them. By January 2007, he was doing quite well and even running several 5k races.

In January 2008, Seth and Xavier Cross came to Tanner with a brilliant idea. It was a “Bury the Hatchet” match between Seth and Tanner. One last match to decide who would win it all. It didn’t take long for Tanner’s prosthetic feet to become weapons in the match. This match would be viewed by both wrestlers in their “WCBI Looks Back” special as a big mistake. The heated feud had ended a decade before and no one really cared any more about the history.

Tanner continues to be involved in north Mississippi business and politics. He even ran for mayor of Iuka, MS, in 2009. He and Betty have five adopted children—Thomas, Grace, Samantha, Isaac and Kurt.

His Story:

Buford was born on June 28, 1957 to Robert and Amanda (Collins) Jamison Jr. in Jackson, WY. He grew up around Grand Teton National Park until his family moved to San Francisco in 1970. His father worked for the National Park Services at Grand Teton and was offered a pay raise to take over at the Golden Gate National Recreational Area. The family moved to Mill Valley where Buford went to school and played shortstop for Tamalpais High School.

During his sophomore year, he tried out for the wrestling team but was disqualified during the tryout match. This earned him a bad reputation as a bully around school. One of his few friends in California was the only son of Moondog Mayne. Mayne worked to get Buford a chance at Big Time Wrestling. Promoter Roy Shire saw Buford’s potential, but he couldn’t come up with a proper gimmick for him. Mayne explained to Shire the problems Buford was having in school. Buford didn’t like the reputation at school, but he had been warned repeatedly about the consequences at home for fighting at school.

With his parents’ permission, Buford signed a two-year contract with Big Time Wrestling (BTW) at the end of his sophomore year of high school. He debuted in the ring against Great Mephisto. The bully got schooled. However, Mephisto took him under his wing and helped train him to be a better heel. Buford went on to win the Northern California Heavyweight Title on August 6, 1976 and hold it for almost a year before it was dropped by the NWA in June 1977. Buford’s contract ran out in July 1977 and Shire refused to re-sign the former champion. Buford went to NWA Amarillo and won the Western States Heavyweight Title from Doug Somers in October 1977 and lost it to Bull Ramos three nights later.

During his time in BTW, Buford stayed in school. We graduated from Tamalpais High School in 1975 and went on to study History at the University of California at Berkeley. When his BTW contract was over, he transferred to Texas Tech to finish out his education and graduated in 1978 with his bachelor’s. He went on to pursue a Master’s degree, focusing primarily on the Revolutionary War period, at Ole Miss after graduation. In 1982, he was awarded a Ph.D. in History from Ole Miss.

While at Ole Miss, Buford met Janette Parker, the aunt of Diana (Moonchild) and Sam Parker. They married on April 17, 1983 in Oxford, MS. Buford took two weeks off from wrestling after the wedding and returned to defeat Aaron Adams for the MVW Heavyweight Title on May 1. His son Marcus (who would be the fourth and final man to wrestle under Mr. Mississippi’s mask) was born on June 2, 1985.

Overall, Buford enjoyed his time as the masked Mr. Mississippi even better than his “Big Bully” days. The idea of being the hometown hero of the entire organization thrilled him. However, he felt it best to retire from the ring on June 26, 1986 after one final match with the Grappler. He had been looking for, and had received, a teaching and research position on the university level. In July 1986, Buford, Janette and Marcus left Mississippi and moved to Richmond, VA, where he continues to serve on the history faculty today at the University of Richmond. He also teaches an occasional history of law class for the T.C. Williams School of Law there.

On occasion, Buford misses not being in the ring, but he knew that his legacy lived on while his son donned the mask and continued the persona that had made him so popular as a wrestler. Under the MVW’s Mentorship program, Buford excelled above everyone else, mentoring eight wrestlers (including those who followed after him as Mr. Mississippi). Even after he retired from wrestling, he still enjoyed training and honing wrestlers. Buford also works as a trainer for NWA Fusion in Virginia.

Match: Argonaut #2 vs Troy Canby (3/23/78)

March 23, 1978
National Guard Armory
Tupelo, MS

Argonaut #2 vs Troy Canby

Littleton climbs back into the ring. Jackson climbs into the ring after walking down the aisle. Littleton begins the introduction, “The following contest is set for one fall with a fifteen-minute time limit. The referee for this match is Thomas Jackson.”

Jason walks down the aisle with #2 following right behind him. The crowd boos terribly.

Littleton continues, “Introducing first, accompanied to the ring by his manager Jason James, from Mount Olympus, weighing 296 pounds, one-half of the Mississippi State Tag Team champions, here is Argonaut #2!!!”

The crowd continues to boo. The reaction changes greatly once the Canby Twins emerge from the curtain.

Littleton continues, “His opponent, accompanied to the ring by his brother Travis, from Holly Springs, weighing 242 pounds, is Troy Canby!!!”

Both Canby twins climb into the ring. #2 wants one of them to leave. Jackson makes Travis leave. #2 goes to the corner and talks with Jason for a moment. Jason jumps off the ring apron. Jackson calls for the bell.

Troy and #2 circle each other. Troy goes to lock up, but #2 shoves him across the ring. #2 stomps across the ring as Troy gets to his feet. #2 goes to grab Troy, but Troy moves out of the way. #2 goes for a clubbing forearm, but Troy moves out of the way. #2 hits the top rope instead. Troy runs into the far ropes and comes off with a flying cross body block, but #2 catches him. Troy struggles, but #2 drops him across his knee with a vicious backbreaker. #2 picks him back up by the hair. Jackson warns #2 about pulling the hair.

#2 whips Troy into the turnbuckle. He charges the corner, but Troy moves out of the way. #2 crashes into the turnbuckle. Troy goes for a rollup, but #2 hangs onto the ropes. Jackson tells him to let go of the ropes. Troy rolls to his feet and runs into the far ropes. He ducks #2’s clothesline. Troy jumps onto the middle rope and springboards off with an Asai moonsault that knocks #2 backwards. Troy gets back to his feet and runs into a flying forearm smash as #2 catches himself next to the ropes. Troy tries to whip #2 across the ring, but #2 holds onto the ropes. #2 throws Troy out of the ring through the ropes.

Travis comes around to check on his brother. Jackson climbs out of the ring to separate the twins. Jason grabs Troy by the hair. Travis tries to get past Jackson, but he can’t. #2 climbs out of the ring. Jason slams Troy’s head into the guardrail. Travis continues to struggle against Jackson. #2 picks Troy up in a military press and drops him straight down behind him onto the padded concrete floor. Jason climbs onto the ring apron and drops a knee into Troy’s back.

Jackson gets Travis around the corner. As he turns around, #2 rolls Troy into the ring. #2 climbs onto the ring apron and steps over the top rope. He places Troy in the corner. He brings Troy into the middle of the ring and drills him into the mat with the Juggernaut bulldog. #2 rolls Troy over. Jackson gets down to count … one … two … three!!! The crowd boos terribly.

Littleton announces, “The winner of the match, in a time of 3:06, is Argonaut #2!!!”
